How to Make the Most out of High School Outside the Classroom

By University at Buffalo

There are many factors taken into consideration when admissions committees are reviewing applications. Who you are matters both inside and outside of the classroom.

How can you prepare to show your college or university who you are?

  • Admissions committees realize the impact the COVID-19 pandemic has had on high school students’ ability to participate in extracurricular activities, including clubs, sports, community service and working a part-time job. They will take into consideration everything you have been able to do up until this point and what you are able to do once you can safely do so again. Start making a list of what you have participated in and use the MyCoalition platform to keep track of your activities.

  • If you have not been able to participate in activities outside of school because of a commitment to your family, that’s ok, too! When it’s time to apply to college, be sure to share in your application how your time is spent outside of the classroom, taking care of siblings, family members, loved ones at home.

  • Be sure to discuss your plans with your guidance counselor, college counselor and or a mentor. They can help offer you helpful advice along the way.

  • Build strong time management skills, have dedicated hours for homework and studying, extracurricular activities, work and a get good night’s sleep. These skills will help you be successful in college and beyond.

Being prepared to show who you are before beginning your college application will put you a step ahead.
